Fall is the perfect time to take care of the little things that can make a big difference for you and your home…especially with the cooler months coming our way. It’s time to get your home ready for the upcoming weather and wear and tear on your home. And by doing it in advance of the winter months, you’ll save yourself considerable time and money in the long run. Here’s a quick checklist of five To Do’s you can tackle now to prepare your home for the fall and winter seasons.
1. Gut Those Gutters
Pull out the ladder and remove leaves and other debris from your gutters to prevent clogging once the rainy season begins. Also take a walk around the exterior of your home and check all gutters and downspouts to ensure they are properly attached and ready to handle winter storms.
2. Clean Out The Fireplace
Start by removing any charred wood and ash yourself with a fire safe bucket. Not only will this keep any issues in your fireplace under control, removing that dirt and soot will also keep your home free of dust and irritants. Afterwards, don’t forget to clean the glass and surrounding brick or rock. Then it’s always a good idea to hire a professional to clean out your chimney and check the damper to make sure it’s all in working order (a properly working damper can help keep winter drafts out).
3. Check For Drafts & Ensure the Heating System is Working
Don’t wait for that first cold day to make sure your heater is working! Survey your home’s heating vents so they aren’t blocked by furniture, rugs or window coverings, then dust all heating vents. You should consider bringing out a professional to ensure everything is in working order. This is also a good time to check for any drafts…look at all windows and doors and seal any cracks to prevent drafts and save on your heating bills.
4. Prep Your Yard
Another way to prepare your home for fall is by cleaning any outdoor furniture and gardening tools. Maybe even organize your garage and/or shed. It may not quite be time to put them all away yet, but it’s a good time to clean and get organized before cooler weather hits. Fall, specifically October, is the ideal time to plant spring-blooming bulbs. The soil has cooled down and is ready to be prepped and planted.
5. Add A Mudroom
If you don’t have a dedicated mudroom in your home, early Fall is an ideal time to consider adding one. Think of it as a hub for family organization, that will also help keep your home clean during wet, muddy winter months. Add built-in cabinets for extra storage, a bench, hooks for hanging winter coats, scarves and hats, and a shoe rack for drying wet boots.
