We’ve explored many home renovation and design projects this past year. From popular topics such as new bathroom design trends to lesser-explored areas such as design ideas for your laundry room, we hope you agree that this year’s content has been rich and diverse. As we conclude 2022, we would like to share some resources that you can use to inspire your home projects in the new year.
As Seen on TV
HGTV has shows around the clock featuring home renovations. We recommend:
– Love It or List It: In each episode, interior designer Hilary and real estate agent David engage in a friendly battle to see if their featured client will choose to “love” their newly renovated home or “list” the home and move into a new one.
– Fixer Upper: Follow down-to-earth couple Chip and Joanna Gaines as they help their clients miraculously turn a trashed house into a treasured home!
– Celebrity IOU: Join twin brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott as they work with celebrities to give back to their friends and family as a “thank you” for making them who they are today.
– Nate and Jeremiah Home Project: Famed interior designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent utilize their design expertise to help families build their dream homes. We love this design duo because their designs are always elegant, refined, and on point. You can make some of their designs your own by purchasing a piece from their collab with Living Spaces.
Like HGTV, Magnolia Network (owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines, formerly called DIY Network) features even more home renovation shows. From traditional to modern interiors to handcrafted décor, there seems to be a show for every kind of home refresh. Don’t have this channel? It often requires an upgraded cable subscription. So you may want to call your cable provider for more information.
As Seen on YouTube
Interior designers and home renovators worldwide have made videos documenting their projects. Check out the following channels:
– TheLifeStyledCo. – Interior designer Kristen Forgione has made a name for herself in organic desert living. Her team’s design uses many bohemian and natural elements to create warm and contemporary environments. This design style, which is modern yet cozy, is growing in popularity.
– April Tomlin Interiors – Similarly, April Tomlin is also inspired by nature. However, her design aesthetic tends to be more monochromatic with dramatic and darker elements, which lends a sense of mystery to her designs.
– Sophie Patterson – We like to be inspired by interior designers around the world and across the pond. And we adore Sophie’s modern vintage designs coupled with quintessential British charm.
Another type of channel you can gain inspiration from are real estate and home tour videos. Here are the ones we highly recommend:
– Enes Yilmazer – This professional windsurfer turned real estate agent turned Youtube personality takes us on the most luxurious home tours around the world (the majority concentrated in Southern California.) While most of us cannot afford $20+ million dollar mansions, what we can take away are design elements that we can mimic in homes of any size. These elements can instantly make it look more expensive, often without a high cost.
– Ryan Serhant – If Enes is the king of luxury home tours in the West, Ryan is the king of the East. His tours center on New York real estate. Think high-rise buildings and multi-million dollar penthouses. Again, while the homes featured here are pricey and not affordable for most, we can still be inspired by the individual design elements. Also, because space is New York at a premium, we love seeing how New York’s designers make the most of small spaces.
– Architectural Digest – Interested in what celebrity homes look like? Look no further than AD. They take you inside the residences of stars such as Kendall Jenner and The Office’s Rainn Wilson where you get a up close and personal look at each star’s design aesthetic.
– The Local Project – As mentioned previously, we love to see what designers across the globe are building for their clients. This Australian home design channel features a number of Australian architects and interior designers. There’s a lot of design here that we’ve never seen in the U.S. We think this channel is worth a look, especially if you love modern coastal design.
And for vintage, handmade, and upcycled home décor lovers:– HGTV Handmade – We have an affinity for handmade and vintage pieces because they are one of a kind. One of our favorite personalities on this channel is Rajiv Surendra (of Mean Girls fame). This brilliant man has a very uplifting outlook on life and showcases his many art and design talents here.
Home Design Websites
– Apartment Therapy – Many of us began our adult lives by living in an apartment. And some of us just prefer living in one. We love how this website sheds light on good apartment design and shows us that small spaces can be big on design.
– The Spruce – If you’ve noticed, we often credit The Spruce for our content. Their internet presence is large and their articles are well-written. Not only do they show the latest remodeling trends, but they have a trusted, unbiased team reviewing thousands of home products to help keep you informed before you make a purchase.
– Domino – One of the relatively new players in the home design world is Domino. They published their first print issue in 2005, but have become fully digital since 2021. We like that they don’t shy away from showing quirky design trends, perfect for eclectic spirits!
Home Design Blogs
– Design Milk – Design Milk is the source for all things design. Commercial, residential, tech design, and even fashion design – it’s interesting to see how one form of design can influence another.
– Studio McGee – The team at Studio McGee is taking the world by storm. We’ve seen their merchandise sold at Target and now they even have a Netflix show. Browse their design portfolio and blog and you’ll see that their popularity is well-deserved.
– The Cabinet Doctors blog – Of course, we can’t leave out our own blog that is full of inspiration! We not only gather inspiration from many sources but also use our creative minds to bring you original ideas. We particularly love showing our readers how they can create up-to-date, quality spaces in affordable ways.
In Print
There’s still an appeal for printed media (especially if it looks good on the coffee table!) Below are a couple of our favorites:
– Architectural Digest – Similar to their YouTube Channel, Architectural Digest takes you on celebrity home tours, highlights the work of architects and interior designers, and showcases the latest trending designs. Aside from the magazine, they also published a popular hardcover interior design book, “AD at 100: A Century of Style” that doubles as home décor.
– Elle Décor – Perhaps because of Elle’s name and reputation as a women’s magazine, we get the impression that this magazine is geared towards women. However, the magazine does not only feature feminine interior designs. Many of the spaces can be enjoyed by both men and women.
