• Transition Old Bathroom Trends into the New Year

  • In our last post, we talked about how to move your favorite kitchen trends into 2022. In this article, we’ll talk about the second most popular room for renovations — the bathroom! From shower materials to lighting, there are so many fresh ideas to bring into the new year. Let’s look at how you can modernize current bathroom trends!

    Bathtub/Shower Combo

We’ve seen these around for many years. They are a great choice for compact bathrooms. However, if you have some space to spare (particularly in the master bathroom), we recommend installing a standalone bathtub for a more luxurious look and feel, especially if you use your bathtub often.

If you don’t find yourself using your bathtub, then it may be worth considering removing the bathtub and replacing it with a full shower installation. This will open some space in the bathroom and also make getting in and out of the shower easier. Additionally, with a full shower, you don’t need to use shower curtains, which makes the space look cleaner and more modern. We know glass panels exist for bathtub/shower combos, but we can’t help but feel claustrophobic when thinking of this idea!

    Basic White Fiberglass Shower Stalls

Homeowners are moving away from the basic shower look and opting for more design. Many new home builders are now offering solid surface showers as an upgrade option. A solid surface material is made of a combination of acrylic resin, polyester resin, or a combination of both, then combined with filler, color pigments, and acrylic chips. Other than for shower surrounds, this material is most often used for kitchen countertops.

A solid surface shower offers more design flexibility as you can choose materials to match the look of the rest of your bathroom or house. It offers a glossy, polished look that elevates itself from fiberglass. With that said, those age 55 or older should make sure to look for a textured shower floor material with good traction to prevent slipping and falling.

    Chrome Fixtures/Plumbing

Chrome fixtures exist in the majority of homes and are the default finish for many new home builders. However, brushed gold and matte black have become extremely popular recently. People love the warmth, opulence, and class that comes with gold fixtures and the modern and contemporary look of matte black. Changing the design and/or color of your fixtures may seem like a relatively small task, but it can create a big impact on the overall look of your bathroom.

    Basic Subway Tiles

Subway tiles became popular a few years ago and were extensively featured on home renovation shows. Today, subway tiles are still requested, but many designers have taken them from basic white to something with more flair. We are seeing subway tiles combined with a contrasting border, dark subway tiles, two-tone subway tiles, and more. It’s subway tiles, but with a twist

    Basic Frameless Bathroom Mirrors

People are swapping their typical rectangular bathroom mirrors for something more interesting. Doing something as small as changing your frameless mirror to a bordered one adds a significant amount of personality. Give a modern touch to your bathroom by choosing a mirror that is backlit with LED lights. We’ve even come across mirrors in organic shapes that would look amazing in a modern home. See how Yuni Min at Love Your Abode added drama to her bathroom by simply framing the mirror with a contrasting color below.

    Marquee Lighting

Unless you are going full-on old Hollywood glam, marquee-style bathroom lighting is a bit outdated. This style was brought back to bathroom vanities in the 80s and 90s, but if you still have these lights hanging around, it may be time for a refresh. The lighting styles that are of the moment are pendant lights and side sconces. Observe how gorgeous the bathroom below looks with the decorative sconces on the sides!
