• Your Laundry Room Can, Too, Be Gorgeous

  • Most people love the smell of fresh laundry. However, doing the laundry is not exactly at the top of our list of likes. The laundry room is also a neglected part of many homes. Likely because people feel kitchens and bathrooms receive higher traffic, the laundry room seems to often be at the bottom of the list when it comes to renovations. However, what we can tell you is, laundry will become less of a chore if you’re working in beautiful surroundings! Read on to learn how you can have a well-designed and well-organized laundry room.

    Cabinets for the Laundry Room

Your laundry room will immediately look less cluttered with the addition of cabinets. It’s a fantastic way to hide the colorful packaging from laundry products that rarely goes with any home décor theme. Hiding all the clutter from plain sight will make a world of difference.

Like the kitchen, you can also choose to take advantage of open shelving in the laundry room. But keep in mind that with open shelving, you will need to do more upkeep to keep it clean and dust-free. The key to beautiful open shelving is to choose items you want displayed. In other words, you should invest in matching containers and storage bins for your laundry products.

The Advantages of a Laundry Room Sink

If you have the space, adding a sink to the laundry room will be super handy for handwashing and spot-cleaning items. You can also pre-soak clothing for easier stain-removal. It is more hygienic to wash dirty items in a dedicated laundry room sink than in a kitchen sink. Overall, it’s much more convenient to wash and dry and have everything laundry-related in one place!

    Add Space for Drying

It’s important to consider adding at least a drying rack to the room so you can properly dry delicate items. We’re huge fans of wall-mounted, folding drying racks. These racks allow you to fold the rack flat against the wall when it’s not in use.

For those who have lots of space to work with, a clothing rod is a great idea. This idea is wonderful for “hang to dry” items. Only hanging clothing to dry in the laundry room keeps things neat and tidy.

    Laundry Room Appliance Recommendations

There are so many choices for washers and dryers these days that choosing a pair can be overwhelming. Your first question may be…do I want a top load or front load washer? Each type has its advantages. We aren’t going to go too deep into the functional pros and cons of each type of washer and dryer. You can read more about that here.

However, it is important to note that design-wise, you should choose units that will fit well in your space. These machines come in a variety of sizes. You want to find one that will be functional for you, but not too big for the room, especially if you don’t have much space to work with. If you are pressed for space, consider utilizing vertical space and purchasing a stackable washer and dryer.

Also, this isn’t mentioned often, but top load machines tend to be quite tall, so if you are petite in stature, be sure to choose one that will not be too deep for you to reach into to remove items. On the contrary, side-load machines require you to do more bending to insert and remove items. But a pedestal may help solve that problem! It raises the height of the machine so that it is more easily accessible. Some pedestals, such as the LG Sidekick, add another washer to your unit so you can do more loads at once!

If you happen to have an extra 2-feet wide space and an extra $1,000-$2,000 in your budget, we recommend a steaming dresser such as Samsung Airdresser or LG Styler. The unit will sanitize and make your clothes wrinkle-free. All you do is hang your clothes in the cabinet, close the door, and it will do the rest for you at the push of a button!

    Laundry Room Organization

Baskets and bins are your friends here! The Container Store, Amazon, and Target have tons of decorative choices. To further organize, you may want to add labels so you will know the contents of each container!

Last, But Not Least…Lighting is Key.

As a finishing touch, we recommend adding a flush mount or pendant light. You don’t need to go overboard and get a super fancy, expensive light. We’re simply aiming to make the space look more “designed,” but not the focal point of the home. Doing this will tie the room together and make the room feel cohesive with the rest of the house.
