• How to Make Your Kitchen Energy Efficient

  • Spring is flying by, and summer is waiting in the wings. For many, summer means hot temperatures and turning the air conditioner on full blast. With the summer months being high on energy consumption, there are ways you can cut down on your energy bill and help the environment at the same time.

    Energy Efficient Appliances

There are two costs involved when purchasing appliances:  the purchase price and the cost to keep it running. Choosing appliances that are Energy Star-certified will help you use the least energy without compromising on performance and functionality. Appliances marked “most efficient” are awarded this distinction for being the most innovative and utilizing cutting-edge energy technology.

Unplug Small Appliances that are Not In Use

Did you know that even when on stand-by, your coffee maker, toaster, or food processor is using and draining power? It’s estimated that the average home has 40 appliances that are constantly using power, making up 10% of your energy bill. So, when it comes to small appliances, it’s wise to unplug when unused. Doing this also helps prevent fires as small appliances have been to known to ignite if a part fails.

    Maximize Usage of the Oven

Preheating the oven is necessary for food to cook at an even temperature, but you are wasting energy if you preheat longer than required. So be mindful of how long it takes to prep your ingredients, the time required for your oven to reach the desired temperature, and when you’ll begin cooking.

Additionally, many people put in one dish at a time to cook in the oven. Take full advantage of the energy that is produced by cooking multiple dishes. For example, you can cook fish and vegetables at the same time at 400 degrees. Also, refrain from opening the oven door too many times when cooking as this will cause heat to escape and may prolong cooking time.

Choose the Right Size Pot and Burner

If you can, using a small pot on a small burner will keep energy usage at a minimum. Choosing a pot that is too large will make foods cook slower. Similar to cooking in an oven, put a lid on the pot and resist taking it off until cooking is completed. Putting on the lid helps liquids boil quickly and simmer at a low temperature. As a result, the food will cook more quickly.

    Pressure and Slow-Cooker Magic

Both pressure and slow cookers use significantly less energy than large appliances and can be used to cook many different one-pot meals such as hearty soups and stews – a better investment than countless other small appliances that only serve one purpose and clutter up your kitchen. Simply throw all your ingredients in the appliance and you’ll have a wholesome meal to feed the family.

Wash and Dry  the Right Way

It may be tempting to hit the heavy wash cycle for just about every load in your dishwasher or washing machine. However, to save energy, you should choose this cycle only for dishes or clothes that are heavily stained and soiled. Additionally, don’t overload the appliance. This will cause an uneven wash where some items may still be dirty and need a repeat washing.
